Tammy Varney’s dedication to her son's therapy transforms challenges into remarkable achievements

Tammy Varney is fiercely dedicated when it comes to improving life for her 7-year-old son, Braidyn. Although not his birth mother, Tammy's advocacy for him has been unwavering and extraordinary.

When Braidyn showed developmental delays as a baby, Tammy acted promptly.

“At first, we thought his arm and leg extensions were signs of excitement,” said Varney. “We soon discovered these were seizures. His communication and walking were also delayed. Despite initial challenges, I persisted in getting him tested.”

Braidyn was diagnosed with autism and global mental developmental delay. Even prior to his official diagnosis, Tammy enrolled him in speech and occupational therapy (OT) at Ozarks Healthcare, guided by pivotal advice from his therapists.

“My son's therapist emphasized that while they had him for short sessions, I had him for life, making therapy activities essential homework,” she explained. “I fully embraced this, replicating therapy activities at home, and it has made all the difference.”

Tammy values the care at Ozarks Healthcare so highly that even after moving nearly two hours away to Rolla, she still faithfully returns weekly for therapy sessions—a routine she has maintained for five years.

“The progress has been astonishing,” Tammy said. “Last year, Braidyn could hardly speak, count, or manage his anger. Now he forms complete sentences, controls his emotions, and writes his full name. Hearing ‘Mommy’ from him for the first time was deeply moving.”

Tammy’s ultimate dream for Braidyn—to lead a somewhat independent life—is becoming a realistic goal thanks to his continuous progress.

“My expectations have greatly increased,” she said. “Braidyn is social and constantly learning. His progress gives me hope he will achieve independence and a fulfilling life.”
