How Targeted Nerve Treatment Helped One Patient Reclaim His Life
James (Jim) Kious Finds Relief Through Pain Management at Ozarks Healthcare

James (Jim) Kious, a 52-year-old former long-haul truck driver from Thayer, Missouri, began experiencing persistent pain in his upper left abdominal quadrant in January. Despite undergoing extensive testing - including abdominal X-rays, blood work, ultrasound, and a CT scan - no issues were found with his organs. His care team ultimately suspected nerve-related pain and referred him to Ozarks Healthcare Pain Management for further evaluation.
Under the care of Dr. David Tonkin, Jim underwent diagnostic nerve “test blocks,” a procedure used to temporarily numb targeted nerves to determine if they are the source of pain. After his first test block in April, Jim experienced immediate relief for the first time in months - enough to sleep through the night and feel normal again, even if only briefly.
“The test block proved they had found the right nerve,” Jim said. Following successful diagnostic results, he proceeded with a nerve ablation procedure designed to provide longer-term relief by disrupting pain signals. While full results can take several weeks to develop, patients may experience relief lasting months or even years as the nerves gradually regenerate.
Jim described his pain as a constant, low-level discomfort that escalated with movement and significantly disrupted his sleep and daily function. As a lifelong truck driver, years of prolonged sitting and repetitive physical strain may have contributed to his condition. Prior treatments, including medication such as gabapentin, provided limited relief and unwanted side effects.
Reflecting on his experience, Jim praised Dr. Tonkin’s thorough, patient-centered approach. He noted that procedures were clearly explained, often with visual aids, and that he was consistently kept comfortable and informed throughout care.
“That was huge,” Jim said. “Having a doctor actually sit down and listen and explain was a first. This was really my first medical issue outside of being sick with something common. Dr. Tonkin even took the time to draw out what was happening with me.”
For Jim, the goal of treatment is not just pain reduction, but the chance to reclaim daily life after months of persistent discomfort.
“If this breaks the cycle, there’s a chance it may not come back,” he said, hopeful for lasting relief and a return to normal activity.
