Mammography

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the U.S. (some kinds of skin cancer are the most common). Finding breast cancer early reduces the risk of death from the disease by 25-30% or more. Women should begin having mammograms yearly at age 40 or earlier if they're at high risk.

A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray that allows doctors to look for changes in breast tissue.

Early Detection and Prevention

Mammograms can be used to look for breast cancer, either as a screening mammogram for women without any symptoms or a diagnostic mammogram for a women exhibiting symptoms. A mammogram can often find or detect breast cancer early, when it's small and before it can be detected as a lump.

Breast Cancer Screening Recommendations

The American Cancer Society recommends these screening guidelines for most adults. Your provider may recommend additional tests based on your family history.

  • Age 40 yearly mammogram
  • Clinical breast exam (CBE) about every 3 years for women in their 20s and 30s and every year for women 40 and over
  • Breast self-exam (BSE) monthly for women starting in their 20s.

Annual mammograms are the best way to detect breast cancer in its earliest, most curable stages. Many women put off getting a mammogram due to inconvenience. Studies also show women are more likely to have a mammogram offered by a mobile mammography unit versus going to an outpatient setting.

To be eligible for a screening mammogram from the Ozarks Healthcare Mobile Mammography Unit, patients must:
  • Be female and 40 years or older
  • Not had a mammogram in the past year
  • Not currently be pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Not have implants or breast issues, such as breast discharge, lumps, pain or discoloration
  • Have never been previously diagnosed with breast cancer
